MDG Gives Back - High School Outreach
Written by: Billy Almaguer, PE
We had seven students from Pedro Menendez High School visit MDG’s St. Augustine office this past week. The goal was to let them be Civil Designers and Engineering Technicians for the day, and to demonstrate the exciting career paths that a local Civil Engineering firm could offer a student.
The day was broken up into two distinct parts. The first part focused on splitting the students up into three teams. Each team would then take an existing survey and use some parameters (given to them) to come up with a hand drawn concept plan for either a bike shop, surf shop or coffee shop. The second portion of the day focused on putting their design into AutoCAD. This experience gave the students an opportunity to not only work with a Civil Designer and an Engineer from MDG, it more importantly demonstrated how they can impact their local community through thoughtful and meaningful designs.
The future of our industry looks bright with students like these! We are so grateful for the opportunity to partner with local High Schools to show that whether you pursue a college degree or go straight into the workforce, that you can make a difference in the community.
