Employee Spotlight: Chris Buttermore, PE, Transportation Lead
Chris has been a part of Matthews | DCCM since 2015 and is now leading our Transportation division. His day-to-day includes project management, business development, leading and growing his team, and client interaction.
Chris has extensive design and project management experience on both public and private sector civil engineering projects. Early in his career at Matthews | DCCM, he helped our firm gain recognition with work on an Amazon Distribution Center off Pecan Park Road in Jacksonville. This project was not only important to our firm but to the city, as it was the first Amazon distribution center in Florida and created a large number of jobs in the area. He is currently leading one of our largest land development projects to date, the Olympus mixed-use development located in Clermont, Florida. Once fully completed, it will include a mix of single-family and multifamily residential properties, as well as various additional components such as retail, office spaces, medical facilities, restaurants, hotels, park areas, and an amphitheater.
Building and maintaining positive relationships is one of Chris’s strengths. He has worked closely with and fostered important relationships with clients across the state. Notably Chris has grown beneficial partnerships with municipalities including St. Johns County and the Florida Department of Transportation.
As a kid, Chris enjoyed building things (blocks, Legos, etc) and was good at math and problem solving. He became interested in engineering after it was recommended to him as a good career fit. Chris earned his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Penn State and later relocated to St. Augustine with his wife, Kristy, where they started their family. When Chris began at Matthews | DCCM, he was the youngest Project Manager with the youngest team, who collectively became known as the “Young Guns.” He has grown tremendously during his time here. Chris is an accomplished and highly motivated team leader, who has a passion for organization, effective communication, and problem-solving. With a natural ability to inspire and motivate his team, Chris fosters a collaborative and fun-spirited work environment.
His advice for future engineers: “Learn CAD/drafting early. Get as much experience as you can through internships. Research many firms before you select one to work at.” We are so grateful for Chris’s contributions to the growth, success, and culture of our firm. We look forward to growing our Transportation department under his knowledgeable lead!
